Ans.: Vending Machine. The first recorded reference to a vending machine is found in the work of Hero of Alexandria, a first-century engineer and mathematician. His machine accepted a coin and then dispensed a fixed amount of holy water. When the coin was deposited, it fell upon a pan attached to a lever. The lever opened up a valve which let some water flow out. The pan continued to tilt with the weight of the coin until it fell off, at which point a counter-weight would snap the lever back up and turn off the valve.

Indian Railways Rail Bandhu Gyaniz

Indian Railways is all set to launch its first-ever print publication on April 16, marking the occasion of Rail Diwas. Titled Rail Bandhu, this magazine will be a monthly, and will be launched in the premium trains of Northern Railways. In the pilot run, the title will be distributed free of cost to the passengers of trains such as the Shatabdi and the Rajdhani Express.

The content mix of the inaugural issue would include a story on how Rabindranath Tagore lost and found the manuscript of Geetanjali in one of the London tubes, saloon car recipes from the British era and a story by Ruskin Bond. The first issue of the magazine will also feature the family members of the Railways employees, who were medal winners at the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.

Rail Bandhu will be an all-colour magazine and will only be available in a select group of trains. The content mix of the title will include news, railway events and features, along with stories that promote tourism in the country. The business model of this magazine will be similar to that followed by in-flight magazines. All costs will be borne by the publishers.

Tendulkar has signed deals worth Rs. 12-13 crore with apparel maker S Kumars Nationwide (SKNL) for their brand World Player, within days of Coca-Cola announcing a Rs 20-crore, three-year contract with him. SKNL already has big brand ambassadors such as Shah Rukh Khan for Belmonte and Amitabh Bachchan for luxury suitings brand Reid and Taylor.

Coca Cola signed Tendulkar as its ‘happiness ambassador’, laying the pitch for a Tendulkar-M S Dhoni face-off in the cola battlefield this season.

Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Passes away Gyaniz

Veteran vocalist and Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi has passed away at 8 am on Monday in Pune’s Sahyandri Hospital at the age of 89 years. A musical marvel, who lifted the listeners to a divine experience with his singing, Pandit Joshi was born in the town of Gadag in the northern part of Karnataka on Februray 4, 1922.

Under training of Pandit Sawai Gandharva of Kirana Gharana, Pandit Joshi moved to Mumbai in 1943 and worked as a Radio Artist. His first live performance coming at the age of 19 and his debut album on devotional songs in Kannada and Hindi making waves at the age of 22.

Bhimsen’s music has been hailed by both the critics and the masses with his performances marked by by spontaneity and accurate notes, but his specialisation came in for ragas most popularly Shuddha Kalyan, Miyan Ki Todi and Darbari raga.

But the newer generation remembers Pandit Joshi more popularly for his much hyped rendition on Mile Sur Mera Tumhara music video.

Apart from the classical music Joshi has even sung for several films – like Basant Bahar with Manna Dey and Birbal My Brother with Pandit Jasraj, Tansen and Ankahee.

On its first entry the Italian scooter maker Piaggio tied up with Bajaj or rather licensed Bajaj to sell it’s scooters in India. A decade passed and Piaggio entered India with LML and produced some wonderful scooters under the LML Vespa brand. LML went defunct in the Indian market and now concentrates on exports and some limited domestic 4 stroke production production for the scooter crazy Delhi belt. Meanwhile, Piaggio stayed on manufacturing uninspiring three wheelers under the Ape brand.

Science Express is a unique science exhibition on a 16-coach, fully AC train, traveling across India. This exhibition showcases cutting-edge research in Science. An Indo-German collaborative project; it was flagged off on 30 October 2007 by Honorable Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh and German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel. This innovative exhibition has received an unprecedented response and created four National Records. During its three phases, till April 2010, it has been visited by over 51 lakh people, mostly students. So far, it has traveled over 50,000 km, covering 150 locations, during its 600 exhibition days.
